Taxes off my paycheck and mroe taxes?

Troy Monsivais: Welcome to the world of the overtaxed working class. The government thinks we are rich and should share our wealth.

Lulu Bukowiecki: Maybe. Or you may get money back. If the amount taken from your paychecks was less than your tax for they year, you pay the difference. If the amount taken from your paychecks was more than your tax for the year, the difference is refunded.

Jill Thomer: If you do not have enough income tax withheld, you will have to send a check in April. At $30,000 per year, I suspect most people's withholding will be adequate.

Todd Stogner: Sounds like you are saying that you weren't aware that he wasn't taking taxes off. Don't know how that's possible because you would have known how much he was paying you per hour or for salary and when the cheques were not less than what that would be, it should have tipped you off. An employer needs to provide a stub when they pay and take taxes off and since you weren't getting o! ne, that would be a tip off as well. Now, you aren't an employee in the case when they don't take taxes off, what you are is a contreactor. It is your job to put aside a reasonable amount of money each paycheck for taxes. You could probably find out from the government and submit it regularly through the year or simply keep it in a savings account collecting interest and then once you do your taxes you can write a check for what you owe. They aren't ripping you off, but they aren't paying you under the table....they can only do that with cash. Don't go based on him saying it is under the table and then not declare the money. You could find yourself in a heap of trouble if you do that....Show more

Dale Mccoun: I'm not sure you understand just what a refund is. Through the year you have money withheld from your paycheck for federal income tax. At the end of the year, you prepare a form called a tax return to calculate how much tax you owe total for the year, and compa! re that to what was withheld. If you had more withheld than y! our total tax, you get the extra back as a refund. If you didn't have enough withheld, you have to pay the rest rather than getting a refund.
